If you need a pleasant area to seek out a short hike without having to drive anywhere, then consider the Thorne Pond Conservation Area.  It is about a quarter mile east of Sky Valley.  You might see all kinds of wildlife on the pond, there are beavers, ducks, blue heron and loons.  Also along the walk you will find trails that will take you to the Saco river with some great views.   Adventurous folks can easily walk down the river bed from Sky Valley to gain access to the area.

The pond was originally created to provide water for snowmaking activities at Attitash's Bear Peak Ski Area, which is right across Rte 302 from the pond.  They still use it for that...and you get to enjoy it as well !

Thad Thorne

Thorne Pond was named in honor of Mr. Thad Thorne, who was an early General Manager of Attitash Ski Resort.  His drive and enthusiasm was responsible for much of what Attitash has become today.

Thaddeus Thorne, surveyor, businessman, forester, fisherman, community leader, ski industry pioneer, entrepreneur, and beloved patriarch, died on Saturday, June 25, 2011, at his home in South Conway, with many of his large family at his bedside. (Photo 1983 at Attitash)

If you brought along your bicycle the trails around the pond access the winter cross country ski trails which have an extensive run along the river. It makes for a nice ride with no car traffic to interfere.
